Police reported they were alerted by a man who discovered a vehicle in Hanau smeared with red-colored substance

Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.

Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.

Police then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they added.

City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking official commented the incident made him speechless and had to be solved promptly.

"This incident strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
