The megacity Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze After Diwali

As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that fell into the "severe" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of the capital recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the safe threshold established by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above safe limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and New Developments

For the past four years, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that blankets the city as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed local administration petitioned the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and public health".

Legal Ruling and Reality

Much to the frustration of environmental and health activists, judges agreed to the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Many recording stations throughout the capital recorded pollution spiking around late evening to some of the worst measurements observed during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on pollutants traveling from neighboring India following the festivities.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Around the festival period, the amount of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever measured in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Multiple Contamination Sources

The situation in Delhi is caused by a mix of different contributors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, creating dangerous pollution that then gets trapped over the city as winter air sets in.

Medical and Economic Consequences

Both financial and medical toll on the nearly 33 million people calling home the capital region is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be accounting for approximately 10k premature deaths annually in the capital.
