Studio 54 Fashion Returns for a Comeback: Fuzzy Jackets Are the Festive Season's Key Piece

While the legendary New York nightclub Studio 54 shut its doors almost four decades ago, its distinct style impact continues strong.

This season, the spotlight isn't on sheer bodysuits but on the furry, fuzzy coats and wraps favored by celebrities and club-goers as well.

With the holiday party season coming up, the signature Studio 54 coat is enjoying a major comeback.

Retail Statistics Reflects the Trend

Among the hottest items from a latest partnership between a high-street brand and a London label is a cropped, cream, shaggy jacket with giant lapels.

At a leading department store, searches for taupe faux fur coats have surged almost 200% compared to last year.

The demand for secondhand fuzzy items is also soaring, with queries for synthetic fur growing by 257% in the past six months on a major resale website.

"This is a one and done coat," notes a lead style expert, adding that it acts as the central element of an outfit.

She prefers to style her personal oversized furry coat with hipster jeans or leggings and short shorts.

Screen Fashion Echoes the Trend

This style is showcased in a latest streaming romcom series, where a character wears a caramel fuzzy jacket to a informal dinner.

When questioned about her daring look, the sister responds, "You told us to dress up. It's fashion!"

Emergence of the "Boom Boom" Vibe

The trend fits into what a U.S. trend forecaster is calling "glam excess."

Inspired by the glamour and opulence of late-80s New York, this vibe brings to mind wads of cash, champagne, smoking, high hemlines, carefree attitudes and, of course, fur.

Similar to that era, the trend is set against a volatile economy.

Boom boom is all about dressing for the life you aspire to rather than the one you have to endure.

Contemporary Fabrics and Tongue-in-Cheek Luxury

Whereas real fur was omnipresent during Studio 54's heyday, today's versions are mostly made from shearling—a secondary product of the meat industry—or synthetic materials like acrylic.

The trend represents a tongue-in-cheek opulence—as if a beloved character has taken charge with overblown silhouettes and unexpected hues.

Star Adoption and Limited Releases

A London designer was an early instigator of this trend. Her fluffy coats with poodle-like proportions have been sported by top pop stars.

Due to strong demand, these coats are now only sold in exclusive drops. An upcoming launch includes a rose and grey version similar to a large pom-pom, as well as leopard- and zebra-print options with exaggerated fuzzy trim.

"If you can only buy one thing, you wouldn't choose it to be a basic sweater or a pair of boring pants, you want a standout piece," says a magazine editor-in-chief.

This feeling is shared by a fashion director at a leading store, who calls it "an unexpected, playful touch" that doesn't require a whole new ensemble.

The Ultimate Spirit Lifter

Ultimately, the fuzzy coat can serve as a great mood lifter.

"It doesn't have to cost a lot," says the editor, "and it's going to make you feel glamorous when the world around you is pretty gloomy."
