Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."

The quarterback's response pointed to the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

The Cause of the Latest Exchange

The quarterback's response came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback victory over the New York. The coach suggested that the team had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership

  • The quarterback was traded to the Denver from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos finished 4-11 in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the player from getting injured.

Had Wilson stayed on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
