Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
