A person who laced sweets with sleeping medication and provided them to minors at a summer camp in the region has pleaded guilty to sexual offenses against two young males aged between nine and ten.

The accused was arrested after eight minors and an older person fell ill at the location in July.

The senior citizen, from that region, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the courthouse on recently.

However, he disputed a single sexual charge he was charged with, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was held in detention prior to a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, outlined the defendant's actions to the court.

She explained his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a summer program which he managed.

The man engaged in a "sweet game" with the minors, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge Ruben had played this game with the children "over an extended period", and children had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained the defendant had been capable of justifying this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had worries in recently.

The prosecutor continued: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about what was going on, justifiably.

"They resolved" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

The prosecutor said materials including lubricant, ointment and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild alerted the law enforcement about his worries.

She said the man went on to play the "candy game" with six boys that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not gone out by that stage," she continued.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the events.

Mrs Prior explained the children were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities once more.

She stated Ruben then played the "sweet game" in a area of five youngsters.
