Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial candidates under consideration to replace the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the team's ten-game winless beginning to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town manager - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his playing career - is considered a leading candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves board as they start the search of appointing a new head coach.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United player is out of work meaning Wolves would not need to provide any buyout fee.
