Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio
The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for financial irregularities. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.
He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Discovering His True Position
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
